In addition to ensuring that all elements of governance are maintained and that the established programs are fulfilled, management must promote the continuous improvement of the efficiency and effectiveness of the management system. That is, the capacity to meet the requirements is continually increased, using fewer and fewer resources.

The process by which new objectives are established and opportunities for improvement are identified is a continuous one.

Some of the most relevant information inputs for decision making about where to focus improvement efforts are the audit findings and conclusions, the analysis of the data on processes performance, the management reviews of the management system and relevant non-conformities that are identified.

- Prove it, certify your system!

There are few activities that bring so much value as a system certification does. Why? Because it reassure clients, customers and suppliers that not only do you talk the talk, but experts on the field have accredited that you definitely walk the walk.

Furthermore, having external audits from time to time inside your organization keeps your personnel sharp and your management system updated. Your certification will bring additional value to your business as it the best way to let everyone know you are committed to continuous improvement.

Once you have your system certified, it becomes a powerful sales tool and an outstanding bidding distinguisher

Also, in the case of a standardized management system, it is frequent that the industry's best practices have not been specifically included in the reference standard because it should be applicable to organizations of all types, sectors and sizes. Another essential element of the continuous improvement is the identification and implementation of best practices industry-wise within the same management system.

For example, if your organization already has an ISO 9001 certification and is from the oil industry, you can consider obtaining additional certifications from the American Petroleum Institute Quality Register (APIQR) called API Spec Q1 (for manufacturing companies) and API Spec Q2 (for companies that provide exploration and production services).

Both certifications require compliance with all the requirements of the International Standard ISO 9001:2015 as well as specific and detailed controls for risk analysis and management, contingency planning, change management, supply chain management, training and skills of the personnel.

Another example of this type of certification is obtaining certification under the FSSC 22000 scheme for food safety management systems, for which it is required to comply with all the requirements of the International Standard ISO 22000, with specific prerequisite programs by sector and additional requirements of the FSSC 22000 scheme.
